How To Regain Hard Drive Space After Installing SP1

July 13th 2008

I lost a lot of hard drive space after installing SP1 of Windows Vista. I searched the Internet for a reason why and found this how-to from Alan at PCSupportforums.com

When you install Vista SP1 on your computer, the installer does not remove any of the older versions of Vista files from the hard drive.

This is because the older files will be needed if you decide to uninstall SP1 and these files, naturally occupy a lot of disk space.

If you are completely happy with SP1 and are sure that you will not want to remove it later, you can with the help of a little app remove the old files and regain your disk space.

All you need to do is open a command prompt (click on the ‘orb’ and type cmd).
In the window that opens type vsp1 cln.exe, this file is added to your system folder when you install SP1.
When asked if you want to continue, just click yes.

Be Warned! This will make Vista SP1 a permanent feature on your computer, all the older files will be deleted but you will gain a lot of space (around one and a half gig).

Thanks Alan.
